Ego or the Self

Ego v/s Self – War of the Worlds

by King Sidharth on February, 2010

Ego is bad we are told, ego is detrimental we are told but yet there ego is being embraced by many, including awesome people from self-help and brilliant people from blogging so I thought I’d throw my 2 coins in.

The ego, in bad reference, is – the part of you that thinks that you are superior to others. It tells you to condemn those who are not like you – that’s the part at play with Hitler, with terrorism, with wars and such.

But the ego that good people are referring to is actually called ‘Self’ – and it is the best. Yes I am telling you that being Selfish is good. You can help but be yourself. Self is your existence – your consciousness and it is to be embraced before you can be of any good to you or others.

If you are not selfish enough to bring out the best in you then you are of no use to either yourself or others. Buddhism is based around realization of unlimited ‘self’ – there is no God but self. And that self, unlike ego, sees other with compassion not pity. Jesus didn’t heal with eyes of pity, but with compassion – and so was with Buddha and Krishna.

That self part of you is higher than ego and is ever loving and joyful. We will not get in fight of words for it is the meaning that matters – call it self or ego. When we are happy, we overlook mistakes of others and give everything benefit of doubt – that’s self. When we are in anger or frustration – everyone is cunning that’s ego.

Now I know I am making it sound like not only you should avoid ego but also be your self at best – but it’s not the case for even trying to do such will be egoistic. You can try if you want.

I am asking you to put yourself first. That’s all. When I decide – I decide by my own gut feeling leaving everyone else out of the equation. Isn’t that selfish? Yes! And that’s exactly my point.

Let’s accept that we are here for ourselves. For how long did your lover gave his/her undivided attention to you? Your friend? Or even your mother? Not long… we cannot! We are made to prefer from self – and there is nothing bad in it. For that means that each one of us is responsible for ourselves and free from bondages. We all are free to love unconditionally – such is self that is worthy of all praise. That is indeed true praise of that what you call God.

What about your self and your ego?
